Book of the Month: A Review

Thoughts on Book of the Month

It has been over two years since I joined the Book of the Month (February 2022).

What is Book of the Month? It’s a subscription-based service. Each month, users are presented with 5-7 book options.

Notable Information:

  • I skipped April, October, December, and January.
  • I doubled up in June and October.
  • I ordered 10 books in total.
  • Out of the 10 I ordered, I read four.
  • Out of the four, I read three of them and I couldn’t put them down! I even finished one of the books in a single day; something I haven’t done in a very long time.
  • Out of the remaining six, I DNF one book. It is worth mentioning this was not because I didn’t like it and more because I was distracted and now I have to go back and re-read it. This is fairly common with me.

Why did I join in the first place?

I kept looking at it and thinking, “Why would I want to limit myself to just a couple of options?” and “I have so many books I want to read, I don’t need suggestions.”

And then my friend at work told me she was gifted an entire year’s worth of credits. She told me how much she loved it and that I should give it a try. Another appealing aspect was the idea that we could chat about the books, which would be like a mini book club. I’m not exaggerating when I say it took her less than five minutes to convince me to sign up.

What I love about BOTM:

The badges are pretty cool!

I’m a competitive person and I love to collect things. Badges give me the incentive to read and rate my picks. Do I need motivation? Sometimes.

It’s like Christmas. Every month!

I anxiously await my book every month and make time to read it! Mail is always fun (when it’s not junk mail or bills).

I can pay for my year upfront and save.

A twelve-credit subscription is $167.99 ($13.99/book). Not too bad for newly released hardcover books!

I can skip without penalty.

Even though I pay for my credits upfront, I don’t have to use them every month. If I’m not feeling the picks for a particular month, I can simply skip it without a fee. The credits then carry over.

You can add two additional books per box.

If I’m struggling to decide on just one of the amazing titles, I can add up to a total of three to my box for that month!

The books are actually good!

There are typically 5-7 options. It’s fun to preview them and make a selection. They’re recently published and relevant. So far, I’ve enjoyed all of my picks.

The app is actually good!

The app offers reviews/ratings. It’s easy to use and track your progress. I love that the app allows you to preview the first few pages. It gives me a sense of what the author’s writing style is like and improves the chances I will read it and like it.

Is Book of the Month Worth it?

A subscription made for book enthusiasts! The monetary value is definitely there but is it for you? It’s perfect for people who struggle to find a good book and enjoy contemporary fiction (they do offer other genres but I would say a majority of their titles align with contemporary fiction). BOTM is flexible with the ability to cancel at any time (and cancelation is easy).

If you’re convinced, sign up using my referral link and you’ll get your first hardcover book for just $5. After that, it’s $15.99 with the option to cancel at any time.
